Welcome to Our Classroom

Welcome to Grade 1/2!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to our Grade 1/2 classroom at Henry Coaster Memorial School! We are Ms. Verna and Ms. Meagan, and we are excited to be your child’s teachers this year. We look forward to supporting your child’s learning journey as they continue to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our class theme is “Never Stop Growing.” We believe that learning is a journey, and every child grows in their own unique way. In our classroom, students are encouraged to try new things, learn from mistakes, and develop confidence in themselves as learners.

In Grade 1/2, we learn, we try, and we never stop growing.

Ms. Verna brings a warm and nurturing approach to our classroom. She is passionate about creating a safe and welcoming environment where every child feels valued and supported in their learning journey.

Ms. Meagan is dedicated to making learning engaging and meaningful. She loves helping students discover their strengths and build confidence as they tackle new challenges.

Together, we work as a team to create a classroom community where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and celebrate their progress. We look forward to partnering with you to support each child’s growth this year.

Our Classroom Philosophy

We believe that every child is a capable learner with unique gifts and strengths. Our classroom is built on the foundation of respect, kindness, and community. We create a safe and welcoming space where students are encouraged to be themselves, take risks in their learning, and grow at their own pace.

Learning in Grade 1/2 is hands-on, engaging, and meaningful. We balance whole-group instruction with small-group learning and independent activities, allowing students to learn at their level while also being challenged to reach their full potential.

We incorporate the Seven Sacred Teachings into our daily practice, guiding students in becoming kind, respectful, and responsible community members. These teachings help children understand the importance of respect, honesty, courage, wisdom, humility, truth, and love in their interactions with others and the world around them.

Our multi-grade classroom creates a family-like atmosphere where older students support younger learners, and everyone learns from one another. This structure helps build leadership skills, empathy, and a strong sense of community.

Cultural Integration

Culture and language are woven into every aspect of our classroom. We honor Oji-Cree traditions, knowledge, and values through daily learning experiences. Students participate in cultural activities, learn traditional teachings, and develop a strong sense of identity and belonging.

Oji-Cree Language is taught by Ms. Brenda, both in person and virtually. Students learn through songs, stories, conversation, and hands-on activities. Language learning is not limited to a specific time block—we incorporate Oji-Cree words and phrases throughout our day, helping children hear, practice, and use the language in meaningful ways.

Cultural Learning is supported by Mr. Orville, who helps students connect with traditions, identity, and community. Through drumming, storytelling, and traditional activities, students build a deep understanding of their heritage and develop pride in their culture.

We believe that a strong cultural foundation supports children in developing confidence, identity, and a deep sense of belonging. By honoring and celebrating Oji-Cree culture every day, we help students grow as proud, confident learners who are connected to their community and traditions.

How Families Can Support Learning

Families play an essential role in supporting children’s learning and development. Here are some ways you can help your child succeed:

Reading Together - Read books sent home together regularly. Even 10-15 minutes each day makes a big difference in building literacy skills and a love of reading.

Using Online Learning Tools - Encourage your child to use Lexia and Symphony Math at home. These programs provide personalized practice that supports classroom learning.

Talking About Learning - Ask your child about what they learned at school. Celebrate their effort and progress, not just their results. This helps build confidence and a growth mindset.

Supporting Routines - Establish consistent routines for bedtime, morning preparation, and homework. Routines help children feel secure and ready to learn.

Practicing Oji-Cree - Use Oji-Cree words and phrases at home when possible. Sharing family stories, traditions, and experiences helps children feel proud of who they are and strengthens their cultural identity.

Staying Connected - Reach out with questions or concerns. We are here to support you and your child, and we value open communication and collaboration.

Miigwech for trusting us with your children. We look forward to a wonderful year of learning, growth, and discovery!
