Boozhoo, families! My name is Ms. Lyra, and I'm so excited to be one of the Grade 1–2 teachers at HCMS this year! Since this is my first year in the community, I'm especially looking forward to getting to know your children and families and being a learner alongside them.
I'm excited to learn more about your language, culture, land, and community from the children, Elders, families, community members, and my colleagues, and to find meaningful ways to bring this knowledge and learning into our classroom throughout the year.
Welcome to Our Classroom
Our classroom theme this year is “Together, We Are a Rainbow of Possibilities.” We each bring something special to our classroom, and together, we will learn from one another, discover our strengths, develop our skills, and celebrate each other’s wins. My hope is to create a safe, caring, and welcoming classroom where every child feels that they belong and are supported to reach their full potential.
I’m also really looking forward to getting to know you and working together throughout the school year. You know your children best, and I truly value the insight you can share about their strengths, interests, needs, and the ways they learn best. I hope we can build a strong partnership through open communication, shared ideas, and mutual support as we help your children grow in confidence, discover and develop their strengths, and celebrate every step of their progress along the way.
How Families Can Support Learning
Families play an essential role in supporting children’s learning and development. Here are some ways you can help your child succeed:
Reading Together - Read books sent home together regularly. Even 10-15 minutes each day makes a big difference in building literacy skills and a love of reading.
Using Online Learning Tools - Encourage your child to use Lexia and Symphony Math at home. These programs provide personalized practice that supports classroom learning.
Talking About Learning - Ask your child about what they learned at school. Celebrate their effort and progress, not just their results.
Practicing Oji-Cree - Use Oji-Cree words and phrases at home when possible. Sharing family stories, traditions, and experiences helps children feel proud of who they are.
Staying Connected - Reach out with questions or concerns. We are here to support you and your child!

What We're Learning
Oji-Cree Language
Native Language sessions with Ms. Brenda, woven into our day alongside land-based knowledge from Elders and community members.
Literacy & Writing
Sounds, letters, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, alongside expressing ideas through speaking, drawing, and different kinds of writing.
Mathematics
Numbers and operations, patterns, measurement, shapes, fractions, data, money, and problem-solving through lots of hands-on experiences.
Science & Technology
Observing, asking questions, and investigating living things, plants and animals, energy, seasons, forces and motion, matter, and Earth and space.
Social Studies
Exploring identity, traditions, responsibilities, the land, maps, environmental stewardship, and how communities are connected.
Health & Physical Education
Building movement skills, confidence, teamwork, and safe participation through games and cooperative activities.
Visual Arts
Exploring lines, shapes, colours, textures, and patterns while drawing, painting, and creating with a variety of materials and techniques.
