Academic Programs

Building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking

Core Academic Program

Our K-8 curriculum follows Ontario standards while integrating local knowledge and perspectives. Students receive instruction in literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, and the arts.

Lexia Learning

Lexia is a research-proven literacy program that supports students in developing strong foundational reading skills through personalized, adaptive online lessons. Students work at their own pace to build phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and confidence, while teachers monitor progress to target support where it's needed most.

Symphony Math

Symphony Math helps students build deep understanding of mathematics beyond memorization. Through visual, intuitive lessons that progress from concrete concepts to abstract thinking, learners develop confidence and mastery at their own pace. The program identifies learning needs, supports conceptual growth, and strengthens number sense for lasting success.

Student Support Programs

Ensuring every student has the support they need to succeed

Alternative Education

Our Alternative Education program supports students who may struggle in traditional school settings by meeting them where they are most comfortable. Staff collaborate with each student to create personalized learning plans that respect their strengths, interests, and goals — ensuring every learner can succeed and feel confident in their educational journey.

Learn to Skate Program

During the colder months, classes attend the local arena for our Learn to Skate Program. Students spend mornings developing skating skills and foundational hockey techniques in a supportive environment that encourages physical fitness, balance, coordination, and enjoyment on the ice.

After School Program

After school programming runs throughout the week for different grade groups. Activities include homework help, sports, crafts, and supervised free time.

Schedule:

  • Tuesday: Grades 1-3
  • Wednesday: Grades 4-6
  • Thursday: Grades 7-8
  • Friday: Grades 1-8

Arts & Enrichment

Expanding horizons through music, technology, and creative expression

Barn Owl Music Program

The Barn Owl Music Program brings daily music instruction to our school! Students enjoy one-on-one piano lessons, ukulele skills, rhythm practice, and group music activities that foster creativity, musicality, and confidence. From fundamentals to performance skills, this program makes music a joyful part of every day.

Connected North

Connected North provides our students with access to engaging virtual learning experiences through a dynamic online platform. This program connects HCMS learners with expert educators and culturally relevant lessons, activities, and collaborations, bringing the world into our classroom and expanding opportunities beyond traditional boundaries.

Nutrition & Wellness

Nourishing our students for success

Nutrition Program

Our Nutrition Program ensures every student has access to healthy meals each day, with hot and cold breakfasts and lunches prepared by our community chef. Good food fuels learning — promoting concentration, well-being, and growth for all students.
